For 24 hours from 5pm on Monday 23rd June, the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) live-streamed their event, “The Great Yes, No, Don’t Know Five Minute Theatre Show”, on the topical subject of independence. The show was a combination of five minute theatre pieces both pre-recorded by theatre makers and live, performed at various locations across Scotland, the UK, the world and the web.

Metro Ecosse, Edinburgh-based sister company of Metro Broadcast, filmed the live micro-theatre shows which were written and performed by the public at seven locations across Scotland.  In addition, mobile film units captured performances which were being filmed outside of the dedicated theatre hubs – on beaches, cafes, piers, bridges, fields and even tram stops.

The five minute shows provided a whole range of public insights to one very important issue for Scotland in 2014; the event was designed to be a democratic, dramatic response to the theme of ‘Independence’.

Jo Walsh, National Theatre of Scotland’s Project Manager said, “It is a show created by anyone, for an audience of everyone.  Metro Ecosse’s role is to ensure we capture the live performances as best we can under the circumstances.  The challenge is to maintain a consistent quality of production and manage local and unpredictable technical issues which might arise.”

At the peak of the event, Metro Ecosse’s Project Manager Nigel Kippax had no less than 12 camera, sound and lighting crews filming simultaneously at locations across Scotland and feeding video back to the NTS’s HQ via local broadband technology.

Oscar Askin, Managing Director of Metro Ecosse said, “We had to run an extremely tight schedule and work with a mix of amateur and professional performers of all ages and from all kinds of backgrounds.  Every five minute show needed to be individual and unique and presented at its best.

“It’s a subject which most Scottish people feel passionate about, one way or the other, and that’s what makes it such an interesting and important project.  We’re really pleased to have been able to support the National Theatre of Scotland in broadcasting it to the widest audience possible.”
