Meet Metro’s Account Manager Laura Donea who believes success is all about self-development, taking chances and heading for new horizons. Born in Communist Romania amidst rations of fuel, food and electricity, our Account Manager Laura Donea is a true child of the Revolution who believes in owning your own destiny; exploring every opportunity, utilising all your skills and working hard to build the career you want.

Laura is an Account Manager responsible for delivering on-site production services at YouTube’s production studios in London and Berlin.
She sees her combined love of languages, science, travel and art as the inspiration for the choices she has made in her career.
All that, and a love of speed.
Starting out in life without access to Western culture or even colour television, Laura has since chalked up an impressive list of achievements in video and film production across Europe.  Her current role at Metro involves managing an initiative which makes professional film-making facilities and the latest tech freely available to the most popular video bloggers - and it suits her down to the ground.

Can you describe life in Romania when you were a child?
It was very different under Communist rule. The Western world might as well not have existed.  Moving from extreme austerity to Democracy, our whole lives changed; we saw so many different toys in little shops that were appearing at every street corner and we were exposed to Western culture and news.  It made us aspirational.  It made me want to travel and experience the world for myself.

I wanted to study lots of languages but that wasn’t available to me. French was compulsory but I had to learn the rest myself.  I suppose it made me more self-sufficient.

You speak five languages and are learning German now too – how did that happen?
As well as Romanian and French, I started to learn English at home when I was five by watching cartoons. I learned Spanish a bit later, watching soap operas while doing my homework.  Then I developed a love for Italian film.  Television has been a real learning platform for me. It was my passion for languages and travel which opened the first door for me in media.

How did your career start out?
I took my first media job in multi-lingual production. Working in a media environment, I couldn’t resist getting myself involved in the production any time I had the chance.  You get to manage projects best when you know exactly how long it takes and what it involves. I realised I had an opportunity to develop my career and I focused on learning almost all my technical skills on the job.
I always loved the arts and culture – everything from painting to modern media. Film is my real love but I still enjoy painting in my spare time.

I have always loved driving and I love my fast car. My boyfriend rides a Ducatti Monster sports bike and we go touring whenever we can. I love the excitement of travel and I often plan driving holidays – it’s just so easy to get in the car and go somewhere new. I’ve driven all over Europe from Sweden down to Italy.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Hmmm…. There are probably a few.  I’d say it was the day after passing my driving test in Romania.  I got into my car and drove.  I ended up in Southern Sicily.  I was a pretty confident driver by the time I arrived.
